Intellectual Assets Based Management (IABM)

Intellectual Assets Based Management (IABM) refers to the strategic approach of managing and leveraging organization’s intellectual assets — intangible resources such as knowledge, skills, experience, business process, SOP, customer information, suppliers/partner information, intellectual property, and so on— to drive business value and competitive advantage. Intellectual assets are critical for innovation, differentiation, and long-term growth, and IABM focuses on identifying, protecting, and maximizing these assets.

Key Types of Intellectual Assets:

  1. Human Capital:  employees will take with them when they leave company e.g innovative ability, imagination, know-how, experiences, flexibility, learning ability, motivation.
  2. Structural Capital: remains within the company even when employees leave e.g. organization flexibility, databases, culture, systems, procedures, document services.
  3. Relational Capital: anything associated with company’s external relation e.g corporate image, customer loyalty, customer satisfaction, relationship with suppliers, negotiating power with financier, competitors.

Key Components of Intellectual Assets Based Management:

  1. Identification of Intellectual Assets - this involves recognizing and cataloging intangible assets that provide value to the organization. These could include patents, proprietary technologies, brand recognition, or key talent.
  2. Protection - Intellectual property laws (e.g., patents, trademarks, copyrights) are used to protect intellectual assets from unauthorized use. Security measures and confidentiality agreements are also implemented to protect knowledge and trade secrets.
  3. Valuation - properly valuing intellectual assets is crucial for financial planning, mergers, acquisitions, and investment decisions. Companies often assess the financial impact of their intangible resources to estimate their market worth.
  4. Exploitation - Intellectual assets can be leveraged through various means:
    • Licensing - granting other businesses or individuals the right to use your IP in exchange for royalties or fees
    • Strategic Alliances - partnering with other firms to combine knowledge and resources for mutual benefit.
    • Monetization - turning patents or proprietary knowledge into products or services for market sale.
  5. Monitoring and Management - regularly tracking and updating the status of intellectual assets is important to ensure they are used efficiently and remain protected. Effective management helps identify new opportunities and mitigate risks.
  6. Innovation and Development - encouraging continuous innovation is a key part of IABM. This involves fostering an organizational culture where new ideas are encouraged, and intellectual assets are developed, enhanced, and renewed over time

Benefits of Intellectual Assets Based Management:

  1. Increased Competitive Advantage: intellectual assets can help differentiate an organization from competitors by offering unique products, services, or processes
  2. Improved Valuation: organizations that manage intellectual assets effectively are often valued higher because of the potential future benefits those assets bring.
  3. Innovation and Growth: by leveraging knowledge and IP, companies can innovate faster and create new revenue streams.
  4. Risk Management: proper protection of intellectual assets mitigates the risks of infringement, loss of knowledge, or competitive threats
  5. Collaboration and Licensing Opportunities:managing intellectual assets opens opportunities for licensing agreements, partnerships, and collaborations that can generate additional revenue streams

Examples of Intellectual Assets Based Management:

  • Pharmaceutical Companies focus heavily on managing their patents and research knowledge to protect and monetize new drugs.
  • Tech Companies like Apple or Google invest in human capital, patent portfolios, and brand reputation to maintain their leadership in innovation
  • Consulting Firms rely on human and relational capital, where the expertise and relationships their employees bring are critical assets

In summary, Intellectual Assets Based Management emphasizes identifying, protecting, leveraging, and developing intellectual assets to maximize their contribution to business success and sustainability.
