Life as a Journey

In Javanese wisdom, there is a saying: “urip ki mung mampir ngombe” — life is but a brief pause to drink along a long journey. Our time on Earth, 80 or 90 years if we are fortunate, is but a speck of cosmic dust compared to the universe’s 13.8‑billion‑year unfolding since the Big Bang.

To walk this journey well is to walk with sincerity, realism, and a spirit of joy. Then life becomes blessed: healthy, prosperous, filled with love and compassion, shared with those dearest to us. Struggles carried with such inner strength are not burdens, but adventures.

Life is, at its heart, a struggle — a striving toward higher realms of being: heart, mind, body, and soul. Yet each person’s path is unique. Our fingerprints differ, our tastes diverge, our talents and inclinations are our own. Why compare journeys, when each is a singular pilgrimage?

“No man is an island.” We are woven into one another’s existence. To live well is to learn not to be selfish, for we need each other, complement each other. From this truth arises a universal wisdom — born from the heart, ethics, and moral sense long before written law.

When one feels content, the soul rests. What follows is often the desire to give — to share kindness with others and with the world, as gratitude to the Creator of Life. Giving is beautiful. Giving is joyous. Try it, and you will know.

But endless hunger and thirst never satisfy. It is like drinking seawater: the more you drink, the thirstier you become.

The fortunate are those who know enough. Their basic needs are met — food, shelter, health, recreation. Their bodies are strong, their children independent and thriving. And perhaps most precious of all: friends to grow old with, to laugh, to exercise, to wander and rejoice together.
