Gratitude in the Twilight of Life

Soegeng Priyono

Welcome to today’s reflection. Life feels like it’s moving so fast. It seems like it was just Sunday yesterday — and now, it’s Sunday again. Time runs, and we follow, with steps that grow slower each day.

Reflections on Time

No happiness lasts forever, and no sadness stays for good. Everything passes. One by one, friends, companions, and people we once knew well take off on their own journeys. Our children now have their own lives, with their spouses and children.

For us, a simple video call once or twice a week with our grandchildren is already a blessing. Their smiles, their laughter — priceless gifts that warm the heart.

On Wealth and Age

The wealth we once worked so hard to build now feels different in meaning. What good is abundance if the body is no longer as strong or healthy as before? Some even face new challenges — how to divide assets fairly among children, without causing conflict or burdening them.

After all, they already have their own challenges: dreams to pursue, responsibilities to fulfill, and the desire to live healthy, prosperous, and happy lives with their families.

Gratitude in the Twilight Years

As elders, we simply need to be grateful for what we have. May it be enough for our days after the children have grown. May we never be a burden to them.

If we can still enjoy ice cream, laugh together, and play with our beloved grandchildren — the bright, curious souls of Generation Alpha — that’s more than enough.

Closing

Be grateful, always be grateful.

May we remain healthy, content, and surrounded by love and laughter.

Ameen.
