Entwined at the Pinnacle of Power

Soegeng Priyono

Heads of state or government leaders who simultaneously serve as party chairpersons — and sometimes remain active business figures — have long stirred debate

Politics and Parties

In many parliamentary systems, this is considered normal. Prime Ministers in the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, or Australia often lead the ruling party. The system creates a clear chain of command: the party wins, its leader governs.

But in presidential systems, such as Indonesia or the United States, this practice becomes more problematic. The Indonesian president may also lead a political party, while in the U.S., the president is not the official party chair — though still the dominant figure.

Politics and Business

Holding office while running a business is far more risky. In modern democracies, ethical rules forbid heads of state from managing private enterprises due to conflicts of interest. Donald Trump in the U.S. and Silvio Berlusconi in Italy are controversial examples — both remained tied to major business empires while in power, prompting public doubt: were their policies truly for the people, or for personal gain?

Risks and Consequences

Dual roles in politics, party leadership, and business bring serious risks:

  • Public policy may favor certain groups.
  • Opposition and oversight weaken.
  • Public trust in state institutions erodes.

In countries with fragile institutions, such practices occur more frequently — and can undermine the very foundation of democracy.

Conclusion

So, is this dual role a strength or a poison to democracy? The answer lies in transparency, ethics, and the courage of citizens to keep watch.

Ultimately, democracy is not merely about who holds power — but how that power is used.

Thank you for listening and reading Ignite Hope Indonesia. Let’s stay critical, for the people’s voice remains the last fortress against conflicts of interest at the summit of power.
