Life Between Effort and Mystery

Yudi Latif

Life becomes exhausting when every bite must be judged, every sip measured for risk, and every pleasure suspected for its impact on the body.

We can be so busy guarding our health that we forget life also needs spontaneity — the freedom to enjoy delicious food and drink without being haunted by anxiety. For human beings are not merely bodies; they also long to feel, to remember, and to give meaning.

Caring for health is a form of reverence for life. We nurture the body because it is the house where our consciousness temporarily resides.

Yet illness may still arrive without asking whether the house’s owner has lived well — because of genetics, environment, or causes that cannot always be explained.

There we face the limits of knowledge. We live between effort and mystery: doing our best, then accepting that the final outcome is not entirely ours.

Therefore, guard your health without becoming anxious, be cautious without living in fear, and enjoy life without being reckless. Life is not a machine of cause and effect that guarantees those who live well will be free from suffering.

When illness or unexpected events come, perhaps we need not always ask, “Why is this happening to me?” It may be more meaningful to ask, “What can I still do with this situation?”

We cannot always choose what happens, but we still have space to choose how to respond. The body may weaken, steps may slow, the world may narrow — yet compassion can grow stronger, wisdom deepen, and the soul expand.

Life is too precious to be lived merely as an effort to avoid death. Life is the courage to be fully present between birth and death, with all the uncertainty, loss, wonder, illness, love, laughter, and tears that accompany it.

So strive and hope for a long life, but do not postpone happiness. To be happy does not mean to always succeed in controlling life, but to make peace with uncertainty — and still choose to love it.
